With the legions settling into their winter camps, the narrative turns to affairs among the Carnutes. The subject is Tasgetius, the man Caesar had installed there, his standing with Caesar, and the measures taken in response to news from that state. L. Tasgētius vir nōbilis erat. in Carnūtibus habitābat. multī virī ex familiā eius rēgēs fuerant.

 

Caesar Tasgētium amābat. Tasgētius enim fortis erat et Caesarī semper fidēlis. in omnibus bellīs Tasgētius Caesarem bene iūvit. itaque Caesar ita dīxit: 'multī virī ex familiā tuā rēgēs fuērunt. tū quoque rēx eris.' sīc Tasgētius rēx factus est.

 

sed multī hominēs in eā cīvitāte Tasgētium nōn amābant. hī inimīcī erant. tertiō annō inimīcī Tasgētium interfēcērunt. multī quoque hominēs ex cīvitāte hoc volēbant et nōn tacēbant.

 

posteā hominēs hanc rem Caesarī dīxērunt. Caesar timēbat. ita enim cōgitāvit: 'multī hominēs Tasgētium interficere voluērunt. nunc tōta cīvitās ā mē dēficiet.'

 

itaque Caesar L. Plancō dīxit: 'cum legiōne tuā ex Belgiō celeriter in Carnūtēs venī! ibi per hiemem manē! ego iam sciō: hī virī Tasgētium interfēcērunt. eōs cape et ad mē mitte!'

 

intereā omnēs lēgātī et omnēs quaestōrēs Caesarī dīxērunt: 'legiōnēs in hīberna vēnērunt. castra bene mūnīvimus.' Caesar enim hīs virīs legiōnēs dederat.
