C. Iulius Caesar, De Bello Gallico 5.24

The second British expedition is over and the army is back in Gaul for the winter. The subject is the grain situation of that year, the arrangement of the legions among the Gallic states, and the officers assigned to each winter camp. Ambiorix and Catuvolcus, who rule the Eburones, appear here for the first time in the series.

Tier 1

Rōmānī nāvēs ex aquā in terram trāxērunt. deinde Caesar Gallōs in oppidum Samarobrīvam convocāvit. ibi cum Gallīs verba fēcit.

eō annō aqua dē caelō nōn vēnit. itaque frūmentum in Galliā male crēvit. Caesar igitur ita cōgitāvit: 'frūmentum nōn satis est. superiōribus annīs exercitum meum in paucīs locīs collocāvī. nunc aliter facere dēbeō. legiōnēs meās in multās cīvitātēs mittam. tum omnēs mīlitēs cibum habēbunt.'

itaque Caesar ūnam legiōnem C. Fabiō lēgātō dedit. Fabius eam legiōnem in Morinōs dūxit. alteram legiōnem Caesar Q. Cicerōnī dedit. Cicerō eam in Nerviōs dūxit. tertiam legiōnem L. Rōsciō dedit.

sīc Caesar legiōnēs in multās partēs Galliae dīvīsit. omnia hīberna intrā C mīlia passuum erant. ūna tamen legiō longē aberat: eam legiōnem Rōscius in partem Galliae quiētam dūxit. ibi bellum nōn erat.

Caesar ipse intereā in Galliā mānsit. haec enim scīre voluit: 'suntne legiōnēs in hībernīs? suntne hīberna mūnīta?'
