C. Iulius Caesar, De Bello Gallico 5.31

The dispute between the commanders has become public, and the officers around them intervene. The subject is the resolution of the council, the night that follows in camp, and the order of march at first light.

omnēs mīlitēs ex cōnsiliō surrēxērunt. ad Cottam et Sabīnum vēnērunt et eōs tenuērunt. ita ōrāvērunt: 'nōlīte inter vōs pugnāre! sīc enim omnēs in summum perīculum venīmus. sī manēre vultis, manēre possumus; sī īre vultis, īre possumus. sed omnēs idem sentīre dēbēmus. nam sī idem nōn sentiēmus, omnēs perībimus.'

 

multa verba fēcērunt usque ad mediam noctem. tandem Cotta cessit, et cōnsilium Sabīnī vīcit. tum ducēs omnibus mīlitibus dīxērunt: 'prīmā lūce ībimus!'

 

tōtā nocte nēmō dormīvit. omnēs enim mīlitēs sua spectābant et sēcum cōgitābant: 'quid mēcum portāre possum? quid in castrīs relinquere dēbeō?'

 

mīlitēs quoque haec dīcēbant: 'hīc magnum perīculum nōs manet. sed nōs tōtā nocte nōn dormīvimus: itaque perīculum nostrum maius est.'

 

prīmā lūce ex castrīs discessērunt. omnēs enim ita crēdēbant: 'Ambiorīx amīcus noster est. hoc cōnsilium nōn hostis sed amīcus nōbīs dedit.' longum erat agmen et magna erant impedīmenta.
