C. Iulius Caesar, De Bello Gallico 5.28

The envoys return to camp with what Ambiorix told them. The subject is the council of war that follows, the disagreement that opens within it, and the case put by L. Aurunculeius Cotta together with the senior tribunes and centurions.

Arpīnēius et Iūnius ad lēgātōs vēnērunt et omnia verba Ambiorīgis eīs dīxērunt. lēgātī haec audīvērunt et statim timuērunt. ita enim cōgitāvērunt: 'hostis haec verba dīxit. ea tamen cūrāre dēbēmus. Eburōnēs enim nōn sunt populus magnus. quōmodo igitur sōlī bellum cum populō Rōmānō gerere audent? hoc vix crēdere possumus.'

 

itaque rem ad cōnsilium rettulērunt. sed nōn omnēs idem volēbant, et inter sē contendērunt.

 

L. Aurunculēius Cotta et multī tribūnī et multī centuriōnēs ita dīxērunt: 'sine cōnsiliō nihil facere dēbēmus. sine imperiō Caesaris ex hībernīs discēdere nōn dēbēmus. castra enim nostra bene mūnīta sunt. Germānī magnās cōpiās habent, sed nōs eās sustinēre possumus.

 

'hoc iam vīdimus: hostēs ad castra nostra vēnērunt et fortiter oppugnāvērunt, sed nōs fortissimē restitimus et multa vulnera eīs dedimus. frūmentum quoque satis habēmus. mox auxilium veniet: aliae enim legiōnēs prope nōs sunt et Caesar ipse mīlitēs mittet.

 

'dēnique Ambiorīx hostis noster est. cōnsilium ab hoste accipere nōn dēbēmus.'
