C. Iulius Caesar, De Bello Gallico 5.36

With the fighting still going on, the two Roman commanders take different views of what to do. The passage covers the exchange between Q. Titurius Sabinus and Ambiorix, carried by the interpreter Cn. Pompeius, and Sabinus's proposal to the wounded Cotta.

Q. Titūrius Sabīnus haec omnia timēbat. procul Ambiorīgem vīdit: Ambiorīx suīs mīlitibus verba fortia dīcēbat. tum Sabīnus interpretem suum, Cn. Pompēium, ad Ambiorīgem mīsit. interpres haec verba dīxit: "Sabīnus tē rogat: parce mihi et mīlitibus meīs!"

 

Ambiorīx respondit: "sī Sabīnus mihi dīcere vult, licet. spērō: multitūdō mea mīlitibus Rōmānīs salūtem dabit. tibi ipsī vērō nēmō nocēbit. fidem meam tibi dō."

 

tum Sabīnus ad Cottam vēnit. Cotta vulnerātus erat. Sabīnus dīxit: "ex proeliō excēdāmus et cum Ambiorīge verba faciāmus. spērō: Ambiorīx et mihi et mīlitibus nostrīs salūtem dabit."

 

sed Cotta respondit: "ad hostem armātum nōn ībō." Cotta in eā sententiā mānsit.
