C. Iulius Caesar, De Bello Gallico 5.35

The Roman square holds its ground while the Gauls follow the orders just given. The passage covers the fighting from dawn into the eighth hour and the first named Roman casualties: the centurion T. Balventius, Q. Lucanius, and the legate L. Cotta.

hostēs verba Ambiorīgis audīvērunt et fēcērunt. cohors Rōmāna saepe ex orbe excēdēbat et in hostēs currēbat. tum hostēs celeriter fugiēbant.

 

sed illa pars orbis iam nūda erat. hostēs igitur tēla in latus apertum iaciēbant.

 

deinde, ubi mīlitēs Rōmānī in locum suum redīre coepērunt, hostēs eōs undique circumveniēbant.

 

sī autem in locō suō manēbant, fortiter pugnāre nōn poterant; tēla quoque vītāre nōn poterant, quod tam prope inter sē stābant et hostēs tam multī erant.

 

Rōmānī multa vulnera accēpērunt, sed tamen fortiter resistēbant. ā prīmā lūce ad hōram octāvam pugnābant. nihil fēcērunt quod turpe erat.

 

tum hostēs tēlum per utrumque femur T. Balventiī iēcērunt. Balventius vir fortis erat, et superiōre annō prīmus centuriō fuerat.

 

Q. Lūcānius quoque fortissimē pugnābat. hostēs fīlium eius circumvēnerant; dum fīliō auxilium dat, hostēs eum interfēcērunt.

 

L. Cotta lēgātus omnēs cohortēs ōrdinēsque vocābat et verba fortia dīcēbat. tum hostis lapidem in ōs eius iēcit et eum vulnerāvit.
