C. Iulius Caesar, De Bello Gallico 5.34

The legion is surrounded and fighting in a square on open ground. The passage covers the tactics on both sides: the orders given by the Gallic commanders and by Ambiorix, and the conduct of the Roman cohorts.

barbarī cōnsilium bonum habuērunt. ducēs eōrum per tōtam aciem clāmāvērunt: "manēte in locīs vestrīs! omnia quae Rōmānī relinquent, vestra erunt. sī vincēmus, omnia habēbimus."

 

duo exercitūs erant parēs. Rōmānī tam fortēs erant quam barbarī, et barbarī tam fortēs erant quam Rōmānī. omnēs pugnāre cupiēbant.

 

dux Rōmānōs nōn iuvābat, et fōrtūna Rōmānōs nōn iuvābat. sed Rōmānī tamen spem salūtis in virtūte suā pōnēbant. saepe pars mīlitum Rōmānōrum in hostēs currēbat, et tum multī hostēs cadēbant.

 

Ambiorīx hoc vīdit et suīs mīlitibus dīxit: "tēla procul iacite! nōlīte propius venīre! ubi Rōmānī impetum facient, cēdite! arma nostra levia sunt, et omnī diē pugnāre discimus. Rōmānī nōbīs nocēre nōn possunt. postquam Rōmānī ad signa sua rūrsus ībunt, eōs statim petite!"
