C. Iulius Caesar, De Bello Gallico 5.48

Caesar is marching toward Cicero's camp with two legions instead of the three he had counted on, and Cicero has no word of his approach. the passage covers the march into Nervian territory and the message Caesar attempts to send in, carried by a Gallic horseman.

Tier 1

Caesar cōnsilium Labiēnī laudāvit. trēs legiōnēs spērāverat, sed nunc duās legiōnēs habēbat. tamen nōn timēbat. 'celeritās nōs servābit,' inquit.

deinde Caesar celeriter in fīnēs Nerviōrum vēnit. ibi Rōmānī multōs captīvōs cēpērunt. captīvī Caesarī dīxērunt: 'Cicerō in magnō perīculō est. hostēs castra eius cotīdiē oppugnant.'

Caesar igitur ūnum ex equitibus Gallīs vocāvit. Caesar eī dīxit: 'fer hanc epistolam ad Cicerōnem! magna praemia tibi dabō.' Caesar epistolam litterīs Graecīs scrīpsit. hostēs enim litterās Graecās legere nōn poterant.

tum Caesar Gallum monuit: 'sī ad Cicerōnem venīre nōn potes, epistolam in tēlō pōne. deinde tēlum intrā mūnītiōnēs castrōrum iace.' in epistolā haec verba erant: 'cum legiōnibus iam veniō. celeriter aderō. virtūtem tuam retinē!'

Gallus perīculum timēbat. itaque tēlum mīsit, ut Caesar imperāverat. tēlum cāsū in turrī mānsit. duōs diēs nēmō id vīdit. tertiō diē ūnus mīles Rōmānus tēlum vīdit. mīles tēlum sustulit et ad Cicerōnem portāvit.

Cicerō epistolam lēgit. deinde omnēs mīlitēs convocāvit et epistolam clārā vōce recitāvit. omnēs mīlitēs maximē gaudēbant. tum procul fūmum incendiōrum vidēbant. itaque mīlitēs iam nōn dubitābant: legiōnēs Rōmānae adveniēbant.
