C. Iulius Caesar, De Bello Gallico 5.46

the message from Cicero's camp has reached Caesar, who is in winter quarters with the rest of the army dispersed among the Belgic tribes. the passage concerns the orders he sends out to his officers: M. Crassus the quaestor among the Bellovaci, C. Fabius near the Atrebates, and Labienus.

 

Tier 1

Caesar litterās hōrā ūndecimā accēpit. statim nūntium ad M. Crassum quaestōrem mīsit. Crassus in Bellovacīs erat. hīberna Crassī aberant ā Caesare mīlia passuum XXV.

 

nūntius Crassō haec verba dīxit: 'mediā nocte cum legiōne ex hībernīs exī! celeriter ad Caesarem venī!' Crassus statim cum nūntiō exiit.

 

deinde Caesar alterum nūntium ad C. Fabium lēgātum mīsit. Caesar Fabiō scrīpsit: 'addūc legiōnem tuam in fīnēs Atrebātium.' Caesar enim per eās terrās iter facere dēbēbat.

 

tum Caesar tertium nūntium ad Labiēnum mīsit. Caesar Labiēnō scrīpsit: 'venī cum legiōne ad fīnēs Nerviōrum, sī hoc facere potes.'

 

Caesar reliquam partem exercitūs nōn exspectāvit. ea pars longius aberat. itaque Caesar circiter quadringentōs equitēs ex proximīs hībernīs coēgit.
