C. Iulius Caesar, De Bello Gallico 5.45

the winter camp of Cicero is under continuous assault by the Nervii, and the defenders are running short. inside the camp are Vertico, a Nervian of good family who had come over to the Romans, and a slave of his; the passage concerns the effort to get word out to Caesar.

hostēs castra Rōmāna cotīdiē ācrius oppugnābant. multī mīlitēs Rōmānī vulnerātī erant. iam paucī mīlitēs castra dēfendēbant.

 

itaque Rōmānī saepe litterās et nūntiōs ad Caesarem mittēbant. sed hostēs multōs nūntiōs cēpērunt. hostēs eōs crūdēliter interfēcērunt. mīlitēs Rōmānī hoc ante oculōs suōs vidēbant.

 

in castrīs erat ūnus Nervius. nōmen eī erat Verticō. Verticō erat vir honestus. ā prīmō diē ad Cicerōnem fūgerat et Cicerōnī semper fidēlis erat.

 

Verticō servum suum habēbat. Verticō servō dīxit: 'fer hās litterās ad Caesarem! sī hoc facis, līber eris et magna praemia habēbis.' itaque servus litterās accēpit.

 

deinde servus litterās in iaculō suō posuit. tum ex castrīs ambulāvit. servus erat Gallus. itaque inter Gallōs sine perīculō iter fēcit. hostēs eum nōn cēpērunt.

 

tandem servus ad Caesarem pervēnit. ita Caesar dē perīculīs Cicerōnis et legiōnis cognōvit.
