C. Iulius Caesar, De Bello Gallico 5.42

With the parley over, the Nervii turn to siege works around the Roman camp. The passage covers the rampart and ditch they build, the tools and methods they use, and the equipment they prepare on the days that follow.

Nerviī hanc spem dēposuērunt. tum hīberna Rōmāna vallō et fossā cīnxērunt. vallum pedēs IX altum erat. fossa pedēs XV lāta erat.

Nerviī haec ā Rōmānīs didicerant. multōs enim annōs Rōmānōs spectāverant. captīvōs quoque Rōmānōs clam habēbant. hī captīvī eōs docuerant.

sed Gallī bona īnstrūmenta nōn habēbant. itaque gladiīs terram secābant. terram manibus et sagulīs portābant.

ex hāc rē Rōmānī numerum hostium cognōscere potuērunt. Gallī enim tribus hōrīs mūnītiōnem III mīlium passuum in circuitū fēcērunt. hoc opus magnum erat.

reliquīs diēbus Gallī turrēs et falcēs et testūdinēs facere coepērunt. turrēs tam altae erant quam vallum Rōmānum. eīdem captīvī Rōmānī hās quoque rēs eōs docuerant.
