C. Iulius Caesar, De Bello Gallico 5.41

The siege pauses for a parley at the wall. The passage covers what the Nervian leaders say to Cicero, the same case Ambiorix had made to Titurius, and the answer Cicero gives on behalf of the Roman people.

ducēs prīncipēsque Nerviōrum ad Cicerōnem vēnērunt. anteā cum Cicerōne locūtī erant et amīcī fuerant. nunc dīxērunt: "cum Cicerōne loquī volumus."

 

Cicerō eīs potestātem dedit. tum Nerviī haec dīxērunt: "omnis Gallia in armīs est. Germānī Rhēnum trānsiērunt. hostēs castra Caesaris et castra reliquōrum lēgātōrum oppugnant. Sabīnus mortuus est. ecce Ambiorīx! Ambiorīx nōbīscum est. haec vēra sunt.

 

vōs errātis, Rōmānī. auxilium exspectātis, sed nēmō vōbīs auxilium dabit. nam illī sibi ipsī nōn cōnfīdunt.

 

sed Cicerōnī et populō Rōmānō inimīcī nōn sumus. ūnam rem petimus: hīberna vestra. hīberna in nostrā terrā in perpetuum manēre nōlumus. discēdite! tūtī discēdere potestis. sine metū in quam partem vultis īre potestis. nēmō vōs impediet."

 

Cicerō ūnum modo respondit: "populus Rōmānus condiciōnēs ab hoste armātō nōn accipit. pōnite arma! tum ego vōs iuvābō. lēgātōs ad Caesarem mittite! Caesar iūstus est. quae petētis, accipiētis."
