C. Iulius Caesar, De Bello Gallico 5.39

The Nervii act on Ambiorix's proposal at once. The passage covers the summoning of the peoples under Nervian control, the arrival at Cicero's winter camp, and the first day's fighting at the rampart.

Nerviī statim nūntiōs mīsērunt. nūntiī ad Ceutrōnēs, Grūdiōs, Lēvācōs, Pleumoxiōs, Geidumnōs iērunt. hae gentēs sub imperiō Nerviōrum erant. Nerviī quam plūrimōs mīlitēs coēgērunt. tum celeriter ad hīberna Cicerōnis vēnērunt. Cicerō nihil dē morte Titūrī audīverat.

 

hoc quoque Cicerōnī accidit. paucī mīlitēs in silvās iērunt. arborēs caedere volēbant, quod lignum ad mūnītiōnem petēbant. subitō equitēs Gallōrum vēnērunt et eōs mīlitēs cēpērunt.

 

deinde hostēs magnā manū vēnērunt. Ebūrōnēs et Nerviī et Aduātucī aderant. sociī et clientēs eōrum quoque aderant. omnēs legiōnem oppugnāre incēpērunt.

 

nostrī mīlitēs celeriter ad arma cucurrērunt et vallum castrōrum ascendērunt. illō diē Rōmānī vix resistēbant. hostēs enim celerēs erant et dīcēbant: "hanc victōriam capiēmus! in perpetuum victōrēs erimus!"
