C. Iulius Caesar, De Bello Gallico 5.38

Ambiorix leaves the site of the fighting and rides to the neighboring peoples. The passage covers his journey to the Aduatuci and the Nervii and the speech he makes to them about the legion wintering under Cicero.

Ambiorīx Rōmānōs vīcit. propter hanc victōriam laetus erat. statim cum equitibus ad Aduātucōs iit. Aduātucī prope regnum eius habitābant. et nocte et diē iter fēcit. peditibus dīxit: "post mē venīte!"

 

Ambiorīx Aduātucīs rem dēmōnstrāvit. Aduātucī īrātī erant et bellum parāvērunt. posterō diē Ambiorīx ad Nerviōs vēnit. Nerviōs monuit: "nunc tempus est! nunc vōs in perpetuum līberāre potestis. Rōmānī vōbīs multās iniūriās fēcērunt. nunc Rōmānī poenās dabunt!

 

duo lēgātī Rōmānī interfectī sunt. multī mīlitēs Rōmānī periērunt. hoc facile est: ūna legiō cum Cicerōne hiemat. eam legiōnem subitō opprimere et interficere potestis. ego vōs iuvābō."

 

hāc ōrātiōne Ambiorīx Nerviīs facile persuāsit.
