C. Iulius Caesar, De Bello Gallico 6.15

The account of Gallic society turns from the druids to the second privileged class, the equitēs. The subject is their role in warfare, the conditions in Gaul before Caesar's arrival, and the retinue that marks a horseman's standing.

alterum genus hominum est equitum. equitēs in bellō pugnant.

 

ante adventum Caesaris Gallī paene omnibus annīs bellum gerēbant. aliī Gallī iniūriās aliīs Gallīs faciēbant. tum aliī Gallī sē dēfendēbant.

 

eques nōbilis multam pecūniam habet. multōs quoque virōs habet quī eī serviunt. hī virī circum eum semper sunt. sī eques nōbilior et dītior est, plūrēs virōs habet.

 

equitēs aliam potentiam nōn quaerunt. haec ūna est grātia et potentia Gallōrum.
