C. Iulius Caesar, De Bello Gallico 6.13.8–12

The account of the druids continues. The subject here is their internal organization and leadership, the annual assembly they hold in the territory of the Carnutes, and what the Gauls say about where their teaching came from.

ūnus ex druidibus omnibus aliīs druidibus praeest. hic vir summam auctōritātem inter druidēs habet.

 

ubi is mortuus est, alius vir locum eius accipit. druidēs enim ūnum dēligunt quī maximam dignitātem habet. sed saepe multī sunt parēs. tum druidēs inter sē contendunt. aliī hunc virum volunt, aliī illum. nōn numquam etiam armīs pugnant.

 

certō annī tempore omnēs druidēs in locō sacrō conveniunt. hic locus est in fīnibus Carnūtum. haec regiō est media tōtīus Galliae. omnēs Gallī quī inter sē contendunt ad hunc locum veniunt. druidēs iūdicant, et omnēs Gallī druidibus pārent.

 

Gallī hoc dīcunt: 'druidēs prīmum in Britanniā erant. deinde disciplīna in Galliam vēnit.' hodiē multī hominēs hanc rem dīligentius cognōscere volunt. itaque in Britanniam eunt et ibi discunt.
