C. Iulius Caesar, De Bello Gallico 4.35–36

The British muster has reached the Roman camp, and the thirty horsemen Commius brought over are the only cavalry Caesar has. The passage covers the battle fought in front of the camp and the embassy that reaches him the same day.

Caesar hoc timēbat: sī hostēs pellēmus, iterum celeriter fugient. hoc enim superiōribus diēbus acciderat.

 

sed nunc Caesar equitēs habēbat. Commius Atrebas XXX equitēs sēcum trānsportāverat. itaque Caesar legiōnēs prō castrīs cōnstituit.

 

tum proelium erat. hostēs impetum nostrōrum mīlitum ferre nōn poterant. itaque terga vertērunt et fūgērunt.

 

Rōmānī eōs quam longissimē secūtī sunt et multōs ex eīs occīdērunt. deinde ignem omnibus domibus intulērunt et sē in castra recēpērunt.

 

eōdem diē hostēs nūntiōs ad Caesarem mīsērunt. nūntiī dīxērunt: pācem petimus.
