C. Iulius Caesar, De Bello Gallico 4.32

Some days on, with no sign of trouble, the Seventh Legion is out of camp foraging for grain and Caesar is in camp with the guard cohorts. The passage covers the report brought to him and the fighting in the grainfields.

Tier 1

Caesar ūnam legiōnem mīsit. haec legiō septima appellābātur. mīlitēs frūmentum ex agrīs capere dēbēbant. nūllum perīculum vidēbātur: pars Britannōrum in agrīs manēbat, pars in castra veniēbat.

subitō mīlitēs quī portās castrōrum custōdiēbant Caesarī nūntiāvērunt: multum pulverem vidēmus. ibi legiō nostra iter fēcit.

Caesar statim timēbat: barbarī novum cōnsilium cēpērunt. itaque mīlitibus imperāvit: mēcum venīte! aliī portās custōdīte! reliquī arma capite et statim mē sequiminī!

Caesar paulum ā castrīs prōcessit. tum hostēs vīdit. hostēs nostrōs mīlitēs premēbant. mīlitēs magnō labōre impetum sustinēbant. omnēs in ūnum locum coāctī erant. tēla ex omnibus partibus veniēbant.

Britannī enim hoc intellēxerant: Rōmānī frūmentum ex omnibus aliīs partibus iam cēperant. ūna pars sōla reliqua erat. itaque sīc putābant: Rōmānī hūc venient. noctū igitur in silvīs latuērunt.

Rōmānī arma dēposuerant et frūmentum capiēbant. subitō Britannī impetum fēcērunt. paucōs Rōmānōs interfēcērunt. reliquōs perturbāvērunt. Britannī quoque equitēs et currūs bellī circum eōs dūxērunt.
