C. Iulius Caesar, De Bello Gallico 4.28

The peace is settled and the camp is quiet, but the eighteen transports carrying the cavalry are still in Gaul. The passage covers their crossing and the weather off the British coast.

Rōmānī quattuor diēs in Britanniā manēbant. tum pāx facta est. in Galliā erant XVIII nāvēs. hae nāvēs equitēs Rōmānōs portābant. ventus nōn magnus erat. itaque nāvēs ex portū nāvigāvērunt.

 

mox nāvēs prope Britanniam erant. mīlitēs nostrī eās ex castrīs vidēbant. subitō tamen magna tempestās coörta est. nūlla nāvis cursum tenēre poterat. ventus aliās nāvēs ad Galliam rettulit. aliās nāvēs ad aliam partem īnsulae ēgit, ubi sōl cadit. magnum erat perīculum.

 

hae nāvēs ancorās iēcērunt. sed fluctūs nāvēs aquā complēvērunt. itaque nāvēs nocte iterum in altum nāvigāvērunt. nox erat inimīca, sed nāvēs ad Galliam vēnērunt.
