C. Iulius Caesar, De Bello Gallico 4.25

The landing is stalled: the transports cannot come close in, and the legionaries will not leave the ships. The passage covers the fleet's warships and artillery, and the aquila of the Tenth Legion with its aquilifer, who speaks in his own voice.

barbarī nostrōs mīlitēs prohibēbant. Caesar hoc vīdit.

 

Caesar igitur hoc imperāvit. nostrī mīlitēs nāvēs longās paulum ab aliīs nāvibus remōvērunt. rēmīs nāvēs celeriter ēgērunt. deinde nāvēs ad latus hostium cōnstituērunt. inde nostrī hostēs sagittīs et tēlīs et tormentīs pepulērunt.

 

nāvēs longae barbarīs novae erant. rēmī quoque novī erant. tormenta nostra nova erant. itaque barbarī timuērunt. cōnstitērunt et paulum modo pedem rettulērunt.

 

nostrī tamen mīlitēs dubitābant, quod mare altum erat. ūnus mīles aquilam legiōnis decimae ferēbat. hic mīles aquilifer erat. aquilifer deōs vocāvit. tum magnā vōce dīxit: “dēsilīte, mīlitēs! nōlīte aquilam hostibus trādere! ego certē meum officium faciam.”

 

statim sē ex nāvī in mare iēcit. tum aquilam in hostēs ferēbat. nostrī mīlitēs inter sē hortābantur. rem turpem facere nōlēbant. itaque omnēs ex nāvī dēsiluērunt. aliī quoque mīlitēs in proximīs nāvibus haec vīdērunt. illī quoque dēsiluērunt et ad hostēs vēnērunt.
