C. Iulius Caesar, De Bello Gallico 1.6

The two possible routes out of Helvetian territory, described together with the terrain of each. New names here are the Allobroges and their frontier town Genava. The date at the close is fixed by the consulship of L. Calpurnius Piso and A. Gabinius (58 BC).

duae viae erant. Helvētiī ūnā ex hīs viīs domō exīre poterant. prīma via per fīnēs Sēquanōrum it, inter mōntem Iūram et flūmen Rhodanum. haec via est parva et difficilis. ūnus carrus vix ibi īre potest. mōns quoque altissimus suprā viam est. itaque perpaucī hominēs Helvētiōs prohibēre possunt.

 

altera via per prōvinciam Rōmānam it. haec via est multō facilior. Rhodanus inter fīnēs Helvētiōrum et Allobrogum fluit. flūmen multīs locīs nōn altum est; itaque Helvētiī trānsīre possunt. Rōmānī Allobrogēs nōn multīs annīs ante superāverant.

 

Genāva est oppidum extrēmum Allobrogum et prope fīnēs Helvētiōrum est. ex eō oppidō pōns ad Helvētiōs pertinet.

 

Helvētiī putābant: "aut Allobrogibus persuādēbimus, aut eōs cōgēmus. tum nōs per fīnēs suōs īre patientur." Allobrogēs enim Rōmānōs nōndum amābant.

 

omnia iam parāta erant. itaque Helvētiī diem dīcunt: "eō diē omnēs ad flūmen Rhodanum veniēmus." is diēs erat a. d. V. Kal. April. eō annō L. Pīsō et A. Gabīnius cōnsulēs erant.
