C. Iulius Caesar, De Bello Gallico 1.1
The opening chapter of Caesar's commentaries on the Gallic War, written as a geographical and ethnographic preface before any campaign is narrated. The peoples named here are the Belgae, the Aquitani, the Celtae, the Helvetii, and the Germani beyond the Rhine. Expect river names, tribal names, and compass bearings rather than events.

trēs gentēs in Galliā habitant: Belgae, Aquītānī, Celtae. Rōmānī Celtās Gallōs appellant. hae gentēs nōn similēs sunt. aliam linguam habent, aliōs mōrēs, aliās lēgēs. flūmina gentēs dīvidunt. Garumna flūmen Gallōs ab Aquītānīs dīvidit. Mātrona flūmen et Sēquana flūmen Gallōs ā Belgīs dīvidunt.
Belgae sunt fortissimī omnium. cūr fortissimī sunt? Belgae longē ā Prōvinciā Rōmānā absunt. itaque mōrēs Rōmānōs nōn discunt. mercātōrēs quoque rārō ad eōs veniunt. Belgae igitur rēs quae virōs minus fortēs faciunt nōn habent. flūmen Rhēnum Germānōs ā Belgīs dīvidit, sed Germānī prope Belgās habitant. itaque Belgae cum Germānīs semper bellum gerunt.
Helvētiī quoque fortēs sunt. Helvētiī reliquōs Gallōs virtūte superant, quod saepe cum Germānīs pugnant. interdum Germānōs ā fīnibus suīs prohibent, interdum ipsī in fīnibus Germānōrum bellum gerunt.
Gallī ūnam partem Galliae tenent. haec pars ā flūmine Rhodanō incipit. Garumna flūmen et Ōceanus et fīnēs Belgārum eam continent. flūmen quoque Rhēnum tangit. haec pars ad septentriōnēs spectat.
Belgae aliam partem tenent. haec pars ab extrēmīs fīnibus Galliae incipit et ad flūmen Rhēnum pertinet. spectat ad septentriōnēs et ad locum ubi sōl surgit.
Aquītānī tertiam partem tenent. haec pars ā Garumnā flūmine ad montēs Pȳrēnaeōs pertinet et ad eam partem Ōceanī quae prope Hispāniam est. spectat ad septentriōnēs et ad locum ubi sōl cadit.

quā dē causā Helvētiī quoque reliquōs Gallōs virtūte praecēdunt, quod ferē cotīdiānīs proeliīs cum Germānīs contendunt, cum aut suīs fīnibus eōs [Germānōs] prohibent, aut ipsī in eōrum [Germānōrum] fīnibus bellum gerunt.
